• Sacroiliac joint dysfunction: The sacroiliac joint (SIJ) is made up of your sacrum (triangular bone at the base of your spine) and your ilium (large bone that makes up the rest of your pelvis and hip).  There is a right and left SIJ on either side of the sacrum, occasionally one side will get irritated either because it is: stuck and not moving, moving too much, or moved slightly out of position.  This can be both the sacrum and ilium or just one in relationship to the other.  We have several movement and pain provocation tests to help us determine if the likely source of you pain is the SIJ. If it is, joint manipulation and mobilization help to restore normal joint motion and positioning, in conjunction with stretching and strengthening of the low back and hip muscles, these issues tend to clear up rather quickly.
  • Athletic pubalgia: is the irritation of the pubic symphysis ( the area in the front of your pelvis, where the two bones come together) This irritation can be the result of a trauma, such as slipping and falling, or a groin strain from a split type motion or lunging to the side.  The muscles of your groin (adductors)  attach to either side of the joint, and can pull the joint out of alignment.  There are various manual therapy techniques to help reposition the joint and help restore the normal length and tension in the surrounding muscles, as well as stretching and strengthening of the core, hip and groin muscles to restore normal function.
  • Pubic symphysis dysfunction: is very common either during or after pregnancy. This is due to the hormones that make the ligaments of the joints more elastic, allowing the pelvis to expand as necessary for child birth.  The pain is typically located high up in the groin, either centrally or slightly off to one side or the other.  Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises along with joint mobilization and manipulation will typically keep it under control and manageable during your pregnancy.  After delivery, if still symptomatic,  this same treatment approach will likely get you pain free to take care of your precious newborn.
